Overview
Every S-Class is a snapshot of what Mercedes thinks a car should know how to do. The W223 is the one with the 3D instruments, the rear-axle steering, and the cabin that still sets the brief for everyone else.

Powertrain
M256 3.0-litre turbo inline-six mild hybrid
The inline-six is the right engine: enough, never thirsty for attention. Rear-axle steering makes a five-metre car feel like a rumour in a car park.

Design
Softer than the W222, longer in the greenhouse, almost shy in photographs. In metal it has the presence of a building with the lights on.
The default luxury car, which is harder to do than a halo. Still the one other manufacturers put on the wall.
