Overview
The four-door AMG GT was never a sedan wearing a bodykit. It was a grand tourer that happened to have two extra doors — a long-roof missile from Affalterbach that treated the S-Class as a rumor. The 63 S is the one that matters: 630 horsepower, a wet-clutch nine-speed, and a silhouette that still looks drawn at two hundred.

Powertrain
M177 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8
The V8 does not whisper. It arrives in a wall of torque that the 4MATIC+ system spends as traction rather than theatre, then the rear bias reminds you who is in charge. Ride quality is the surprise — genuine GT manners until the drive mode is wound up, at which point the car becomes a very expensive argument with a B-road.

Design
Hans-Peter Pfeiffer’s surfaces do not decorate the package; they are the package. The greenhouse sits back like a 2+2 from the 1970s, the haunches carry the rear track, and the Panamericana grille is used as architecture rather than jewelry. Parked, it reads as a coupe. Moving, it reads as a statement about what a Mercedes is allowed to be.
Launched in 2018 on a unique platform, the four-door GT sat beside the two-door C190 rather than replacing it. The 63 S was the halo until the 73 and later E Performance hybrids arrived. Production of this body ended as the C192 two-door GT took the name back to two seats.
The X290 GT 63 S is the last analog AMG in a four-door shape: combustion, noise, and a cabin that still believes switches are a luxury. It is the cover story this register opens on, because it is what happens when Stuttgart lets Affalterbach finish a sentence.
