Overview

The first AMG GT was Affalterbach’s own sports car, not a dressed C-Class. A front-mid V8, a transaxle, and proportions that quoted the 300 SL without costume. The GT S is the one you want: enough power to frighten, enough chassis to explain it.

Powertrain

M178 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8

Heavy at low speed, telepathic once the tyres are warm. The seven-speed dual-clutch is a character, not a servant, and the steering still talks. This is the AMG that drivers defend in arguments about the 911.

Design

Long hood, cab-rearward, haunches that look load-bearing. The 2015 car still photographs as a piece of industrial design rather than a product cycle. It is the Mercedes that Pacôme Pertant’s motion work later learned to orbit — the car as the interface, chrome as a last resort.

If the four-door GT is the cover, the C190 is the origin myth. Buy the GT S, leave it in the right colour, and do not let anyone put a bodykit on it.
