Overview

The G80 M3 is the most polarising M car in a generation, which is another way of saying it has a face. Behind the grille is the S58, the best straight-six BMW currently builds, in a saloon that will still do a school run. The Competition is the default: 503 horsepower and a chassis that has learned to be both brutal and precise.

Powertrain

S58 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six

Torque arrives like a shove between the shoulder blades. The rear axle can be a scalpel or a toy, depending on the mode and your nerve. It is less surgical than an M2, more complete than an M5 as a daily.

Design

The vertical kidneys are the argument. The rest of the car is a wide, low, almost American muscle saloon — flared arches, a boot lid with intent, and a cabin that finally feels like a workshop rather than a showroom. Time has been kinder to it than launch week was.

The M3 remains the adult sports saloon. Love or leave the face; drive the thing. The engine is not up for debate.
